THE DEVELOPMENTAL SCIENCE OF ADOLESCENCE
The scientific study of adolescent development has
burgeoned across the past four decades. Despite this
growth, current scholarship does not address all the
needs of the scholars, practitioners, or policy makers
seeking to describe, explain, and optimize the course
of the development of adolescents. We believe that
present and subsequent cohorts of scholars will need
to understand more about the history of the field.
Such knowledge may provide rich depictions of past,
contemporary, and likely future scholarship pertinent
to the adolescent developmental period. Historical
knowledge may also provide useful lessons about how
to describe, explain, and optimize the life chances
