Testing Baby
What draws me most compellingly to the discipline of sociology is its funda-
mental claim that context matters. This seems such a self-evident observation,
yet I continue to marvel at how profound an insight it really is. And never has
the structural power of my own life context been demonstrated to me more
concretely than during the process of researching and writing this book. I could
never have completed it without the advice, support, and encouragement of the
family members, friends, teachers, interviewees, and colleagues who have
formed my own personal context.
The parents who volunteered to be interviewed for my study gave gener-
ously of their time. They also shared intimate feelings, thoughts, and ideas.
I am grateful to all of them, and I wish them and their children all the very best.
I also thank the newborn screening administrators who allowed my colleagues
and me to interview them.
