The aim of this book is to provide foundational and essential, evidence-based knowledge for
midwifery practice. Theoretical and practical perspectives are used to discuss the provision of
safe, high-quality professional care to women, babies and their families. Standards for
pre-registration midwifery education (NMC 2009) insist student midwives need to be prepared
to demonstrate competence and sound knowledge to practise safely and effectively so that, at
the point of registration they can assume full responsibility and accountability to undertake the
role and responsibilities of a midwife. This book brings together knowledge from a collection
of clinical experts and experienced academics to support student’s leaning and prepare them
for the challenges faced in contemporary midwifery healthcare. There is a good balance
between theory and its application to practice using numerous illustrations figures, tables,
and interactive text to provide clear insight into the fundamentals of midwifery practice. Each
chapter’s content is preceded by learning outcomes and an introduction with key points,
conclusion, glossary and an extensive reference list at the end. The book is interspersed with
